Both the Ladies’ and Men’s Hull League teams retained their Tom Atkinson Trophies in contrasting styles in this tennis season curtain raiser.
Alison Olner’s team were unchanged from 2008, Maggie Collier and Helen Longstaff rolled back the years to produce an unbeaten display, Lisa Knapp and Verity Roach matched them with an equally emphatic performance and the skipper teamed up with Pippa Dove to battle their way through the morning’s tennis.
The Driffield League team were pre-match favourites having recruited county ace Chris Harrison and former junior champion Basker Kuma. The Hull side were missing a number of their top players which saw youngsters Mike Bowler, Richard Potter and Ben Arkut all making their TOM Day Trophy debuts. Top pairing Mike Huby and Tom Loughton took 2 out of 3 rubbers as did second pair Mike Bowler and Dave Kitchen but the star performance came from Potter and Arkut who impressed the crowd by also taking 2 rubbers to give the Hull League team their second successive tournament victory.
The Junior and Mini Tennis events produced some fantastic tennis at Red, Orange and Green levels with over ninety competitors taking part, over half of which were under 8 years of age.
J & G’s cake stall, face painting and a bouncy castle were all runaway success again and Hull League player Ben Arkut and his brother Sam entertained the large crowd with a selection of songs and acoustic guitar accompaniment.
